R Delamore Ltd is one of the UK's largest young plant growers producing over 100 million young plants every year and has a core permanent staff of around 100 people, and up to 200 in peak season. Handling such large volumes and coping with the seasonal variations as efficiently as possible means that having a knowledgeable and capable layer of team leaders within the business is vital to its success. These key team leaders already have great product knowledge and understand some of the key business drivers, but through its annual 'personal development reviews' they had identified a clear need to provide them with help in developing their leadership skills. This was a clearly identified need to 'up skill' the team, to get them to take more ownership of things that crop up on a day to day basis and to give them greater confidence in their own ability build to motivate their teams back in the glasshouse.
MorePeople have been the company's recruitment partner for a number of years and so it was a natural extension of that existing partnership that led to us, via our training business MorePerformance, to design a 2 day programme that helped them address these issues. Topics covered included interpersonal skills and communication, effective delegation, coaching and giving feedback, and personal organisation and time management. Commenting on the programme, Adam Parry, Delamore's HR & Marketing Manager said “Having identified the need to do something for our team leaders we then had the issue of finding a programme that suited us and our industry. Working with MorePeople, we were able to fully achieve our aims, as they are sector specialists who understand our business and so were able to tailor the elements of the 2 days specifically to our needs. We need our supervisors to develop their abilities to manage, and be sensitive to, a wide range of cultures and get the best out of their diverse teams. Each of them has now been equipped with the skills needed to do this. They now understand how to motivate different types of people, how to delegate things and manage their time effectively - so hopefully they can achieve both their personal expectations and those of the businesses. MorePeople also helped us access funding from Defra, via the RDPE programme. This was a key factor for us as a being able to deliver the training now as it means we were able to train the whole of our supervisor team in advance of our peak activity period. So hopefully, over the next few months we'll start to see even more benefits materialise for the business as they develop their new found skills, build up their and confidence and turn the techniques they've picked up over these two days into practical tools they can use every day.”
